Summary

Planning an off-road adventure in Utah? Learn who needs a Utah OHV permit, where to purchase one, when an OHV education course is required, and the rules you'll need to follow before hitting the trails.

Utah OHV Permit Guide

Utah is home to thousands of miles of incredible off-highway vehicle (OHV) trails, from the red rock landscapes surrounding Hurricane and Sand Hollow to the mountain trails found throughout the state. Before your adventure begins, make sure you understand Utah's OHV permit and education requirements.

Who Needs a Utah OHV Permit?

Any off-highway vehicle operated on public lands in Utah must display a valid Utah OHV registration or a Utah Non-Resident OHV Permit if the vehicle is registered outside of Utah.

This includes:

  • Side-by-Sides (UTVs)
  • ATVs
  • Dirt Bikes
  • Four-Wheelers
  • Other off-highway vehicles

If you're visiting Utah from another state, you will generally need a Utah Non-Resident OHV Permit unless your state has a reciprocity agreement with Utah.

Utah also requires many riders to complete an approved OHV education course before operating an off-highway vehicle on public land.

The online course teaches riders about:

  • Safe riding practices
  • Utah trail laws and regulations
  • Responsible recreation and trail etiquette
  • Environmental stewardship
  • Emergency preparedness

After successfully completing the course, riders receive an OHV Education Certificate or license that must be carried while riding when required by Utah law. Taking the course before your trip helps ensure you're prepared and compliant with state regulations.

Where Can You Buy a Utah OHV Permit?

Non-resident permits can be purchased online before your trip through the Utah Division of Outdoor Recreation. Buying your permit in advance saves time and allows you to head straight to the trails upon arrival.

Some authorized OHV dealers and recreation vendors throughout Utah also sell permits.

Utah OHV Safety Requirements

To help keep everyone safe, riders should:

  • Complete the required OHV education course when applicable.
  • Ride only on designated OHV routes.
  • Wear a DOT-approved helmet when required by law.
  • Carry your permit, registration, and education certificate if required.
  • Respect trail closures and seasonal restrictions.
  • Yield to hikers, horseback riders, and other trail users.
  • Stay on designated trails to protect Utah's beautiful public lands.

Why Permits Matter

OHV permit fees help fund:

  • Trail maintenance
  • Route improvements
  • Rider education
  • Search and rescue operations
  • Public land conservation

By purchasing a permit and completing the required education course, you're helping preserve Utah's world-class off-road trail system for future generations.
