RAP — Ride Around Powell: Utah's Ultimate ADV Loop

Picture this: five days carving through some of the most jaw-dropping terrain Utah has to offer, with nothing but your bike, your gear, and miles of red rock country stretching ahead. RAP — Ride Around Powell isn't your typical guided tour where someone holds your hand. This is pure, self-supported adventure riding at its finest. Starting from Mount Carmel Junction, you'll trace a loop through the Grand Staircase–Escalante region, around Lake Powell's remote edges, and deep into the Henry Mountains backcountry. We're talking 100-150 miles per day of intermediate dirt roads, rocky descents, sandy washes, and those classic Utah slickrock sections that'll test your throttle control and line choice. This February 26–March 2, 2027 departure is shaping up to be our most popular cross-country adventure yet.

What You're Getting Into

Let's be straight up about what RAP delivers. This isn't a leisurely cruise through national parks. You're looking at five solid days of intermediate-level off-roading through some seriously remote country. The route hits legendary spots like Hell's Backbone — a narrow ridge road that'll have you gripping the bars a little tighter — and the famous Burr Trail with its switchbacks carved into Capitol Reef's cliffs. You'll roll through Lone Rock Beach where Lake Powell meets red sand dunes, navigate the technical sections around Gunsight Butte, and tackle the Notom–Bullfrog Road that connects Capitol Reef to Glen Canyon. The Wolverine Loop alone is worth the price of admission, winding through slot canyon country most folks never see. We keep groups small — minimum 8 riders to make it happen, max 13 to keep it manageable. Your adventure bike needs to be 480 pounds or less, because trust me, you don't want to be wrestling a heavy machine through sand washes and rock gardens. Boulder, Utah serves as a perfect midpoint resupply, but everything else? That's on you to carry.

Trail Conditions & Riding Style

Southern Utah in late February and early March serves up perfect riding conditions. Daytime temps hover around 50-60°F, nights drop to the 30s — ideal for covering ground without overheating your bike or yourself. The terrain mix is what makes this loop special: hard-packed dirt roads where you can open it up, followed by technical rocky sections that demand precise throttle control and clutch work. Sand washes require momentum and proper body positioning — stand up, weight back, and let the bike float beneath you. The slickrock sections are grippy when dry but can turn treacherous with morning frost, so timing your departures matters. Route finding skills come in handy since some sections follow jeep trails and motorcycle tracks rather than maintained roads. GPS coordinates are provided, but having solid map and compass backup keeps you honest. Water crossings are minimal this time of year, but creek beds can hide loose rocks and soft sand. The beauty of intermediate terrain is that it challenges your skills without requiring extreme technical riding — perfect for adventure riders ready to step up from fire roads but not quite ready for single-track madness.

Wildlife You'll Encounter

The desert comes alive in early spring, and you'll share the trail with some fascinating locals. Desert bighorn sheep call the Henry Mountains home, and spotting a ram picking his way across impossible cliff faces never gets old. These guys can weigh up to 300 pounds and navigate terrain that would challenge a mountain goat. Early morning and late afternoon offer your best chances, especially near water sources. Mule deer are everywhere through this region, and they have zero respect for trail etiquette — they'll bound right across your path without warning. Utah's pronghorn antelope roam the higher elevation sections, and watching them cover ground at 40+ mph makes your bike feel slow. Ravens are your constant companions, smart enough to follow riders hoping for dropped food or shiny objects. Mountain lions prowl this country too, though you're more likely to see tracks in sandy washes than spot the cat itself. The real treat is stumbling across wild horses in the Henry Mountains — one of the few places they still run free. These aren't Disney horses; they're tough, scrappy survivors perfectly adapted to desert life. Seeing a stallion leading his band across a mesa at sunrise? That's the kind of moment that makes self-supported adventure riding worth every mile of preparation.

Time to Lock In Your Spot

RAP — Ride Around Powell represents everything great about self-supported adventure riding. You get world-class scenery, challenging intermediate terrain, and the satisfaction that comes from carrying everything you need for five days in the backcountry. This isn't some sanitized adventure tour — it's the real deal, designed for riders who want to test themselves against Utah's legendary landscapes. The February 26 departure gives you perfect weather, minimal crowds, and that crisp desert air that makes every mile feel pure. Spots fill fast because experienced adventure riders know what RAP delivers: genuine self-supported challenge through some of the most spectacular riding country in the Southwest. Don't wait until the last minute to secure your place — this customer-favorite loop sells out every year for good reason.
